Technology — The World’s Most Subtle Drug

Technology promises convenience, connection, and progress—but behind the glow of our screens lies a far greater danger. Unlike other addictions, technology hides in plain sight. It entertains us, simplifies our lives, and provides us with information at our fingertips, all while quietly shaping our minds and hearts.

In The Lawless Hunter, Noah Burk calls technology “the world’s most deceptive drug.” It conditions us to value speed over wisdom, appearance over truth, and convenience over discernment. Hours spent on social media or endless streaming often leave us more restless, isolated, and spiritually numb.

The Bible warns us not to be ignorant of Satan’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11). Today, those “devices” are literal. They stream images and voices that normalize sin, glorify rebellion, and dull our hunger for holiness. What feels harmless entertainment often reshapes how we think, what we love, and how we see the world.

Technology itself is not inherently evil, but unchecked dependence on it can lead to spiritual bondage. The antidote is renewal. Romans 12:2 calls us to resist conformity and be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Only when Christ governs our hearts can we use technology without becoming enslaved by it.
